The Vesica Piscis
is the
crucible of the creative process, an opening to the womb from
which all geometric forms are born. It is a
symbol of the fusion of opposites and a passageway through
the world's apparent polarities. The Vesica Piscis is the
geometric image through which light was born. It is also the
geometry for the human eye.
The Vesica Piscis is initiated by linking two circles
together, bringing the outside edge of each to the midway
point of the other. It is further expanded by the inclusion
of the inner concentric circles. The almond-shaped center of
the image is called a mandorla, which is often seen as
a grail or chalice. When the Vesica Piscis is displayed
vertically, the mandorla forms the shape of a fish. The word
"fish" translates into Greek as "ichthys", which is an
acronym for "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior." Early
Christians adopted the fish symbol as their own, and used it
as sort of secret code to identify themselves to one another
and avoid persecution.
When the Vesica Piscis is viewed horizontally, however, the
mandorla becomes a different sort of passage: the birth
passage. The pointed oval is a universal symbol of the Divine
Feminine, and in this context the Vesica Piscis is the vulva
of the Goddess, surrounded by the crescents of the waxing and
waning moon.
